The Return: The Air Jordan XI

After chasing his dreams on the baseball diamond during ‘93-94, Michael Jordan announced his return to the sport he loved most with a simple phrase “I’m back”.

Michael rejoined his Chicago Bulls team right at the end of the 94-95 regular season where he donned the underappreciated Air Jordan 10 and the number 45 (the Bulls retired his number earlier that year) for the last quarter of the season. It wasn’t until the second round of the 95 playoffs when he pulled out one of his most legendary shoes of all time - the Air Jordan 11. Dressed in 360 degrees of glistening patent leather - a first for a basketball shoe at the time - the AJ 11 was an eye-popping combination of luxury and function.

After stripping Jordan during the final possession of Game 1, the Orlando Magic’s Nick Anderson quipped “45 doesn’t explode like 23 used to” and inspired one of the most iconic moments in sports history. The next game Jordan returned wearing 23 in a literal and metaphorical return to form.

The infractions of wearing the bright white, high-gloss Air Jordan 11 that didn’t match the Bulls colors as well as the quick number change cost the Bulls organization a total of $30,000. Though the Bulls would be sent fishing after that playoff series, the Air Jordan 11 made its impact. Its popularity would only skyrocket after appearing in Space Jam the following year. Now the storied shoe will make its return to the streets much like Jordan in '95.
