Share This Page: adidas Tubular X Primeknit Through the years, adidas has been a powerhouse both in athletics and aesthetics. Though the shoe brand has long proven it's ability in the field, it has shown breakthroughs in style. In the late 90s, this was shown true again when Nic Galway, VP Global Design for adidas Originals, created a contemporary sneaker with nods to some great adidas silhouettes. This shoe was the adidas Tubular. At the turn of the century, adidas design engineers thought of a sneaker with a sole similar to inner tire tubes. They wanted to create a shoe that would revolutionize running sneakers. However, the technology was not in place for such a silhouette to be created at the time. If adidas made the sneaker in the 90s, it would have been too expensive. As a result, the designs were put into the adidas archives. After years gathering dust, Galway pulled those designs out of the archives to finally create the kicks. His vision was to stay as true to the original sketches of the idea as possible, which was to walk on a tire-like tube. He found inspiration in some rally car tires that used foams of different densities instead of air. This design led the sole to be constructed of EVA foam. The denser portion makes up the outer ring of the sole, while the softer foam makes up the inner tube. Hitting gold yet again with the Tubular- adidas married elegant design and street aesthetics to create a silhouette that has qualities of high end fashion and underground looks. While the original designs were intended for a running shoe, the Tubular was constructed as more of a lifestyle silhouette. Galway previously worked on the adidas Y-3 Qasa with Yohji Yamamoto, and the Tubular clearly takes a lot of design ques from the Y-3. The Tubular even pays tribute to the adidas ZX Flux with the stitched on heel cage similar to the Flux’s heel cage. Galway wanted a silhouette which was easily recognizable, and he succeeded with the Tubular. Similar to the Y-3, the Tubular has seen wide-spread success with its simple, yet eye-catching design. The shoe has picked up traction within sneaker culture because sneakerheads were looking for something different. The latest version of the sneaker is the adidas Tubular X Primeknit. This silhouette is debuting in two colorways, the “Snake” and the “Aqua.” The adidas Tubular X Primeknit “Snake” is black primeknit material in a snake-scale pattern on the upper with white adidas logos on the heel. The tube-like sole is black and white with a tire-like tread, adding texture to the midsole and outsole. The adidas Tubular X Primeknit “Aqua” is constructed with bright aqua primeknit material from heel to toe with white accents on the adidas logo. The sole is half aqua and half white with tire tread on the midsole outsole. The adidas Tubular X Primeknit "Snake" and "Aqua" are available now online and in stores. They are available in Men’s for $160 each.
