Share This Page: Air Jordan 5 Retro Low 'Fire Red' Playing on our nostalgia, the Air Jordan 5 Low is dropping in one of the legendary, original colorways from 1990, ‘Fire Red.’ Inspired by the World War II fighter plane, the Mustang, Tinker Hatfield took a lot of design from these legendary planes, and minimal features from the previous four Air Jordans. Most evident in the “teeth” on the midsole, Hatfield thought Jordan’s playstyle was similar to how a fighter plane strikes. He said like the fighter, Jordan was known for “floating around the edges of the game and comes out of nowhere to attack.” Mike did exactly that against the Cavaliers, scoring a career high 69 points. MJ would make his sixth straight All-Star game appearance, and win his fourth straight league scoring title, while wearing the AJ 5. Nike again had Spike Lee assist with the Air Jordan advertising campaign with his character Mars Blackmon, asking “is it the shoes?” The Air Jordan 5 is a classic Jordan silhouette, and Nike released an off court colorway as well. Nike released the ‘Grape’ colorway so Jordan fans could stunt on the streets as well. Arguably it was Will Smith who made the AJ 5 ‘Grape’ popular by rocking them on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The AJ 5 was first retroed in 2000, and now it is coming around again in a Low version in 2016. Unique flairs pepper the design of the Air Jordan 5, as stated the “teeth” borrowed from P-51 Mustang fighter adds intrigue to the silhouette. The sneaker features mesh netting on the tongue and side panels and a unique lace lock. Tinker Hatfield added 3M reflective material to the tongue to catch camera flashes during epic Jordan moments on court. The AJ 5 was the first Jordan silhouette to have a clear outsole, and it kept the visible air unit in the heel. Like the classic this sneaker is based on, the AJ 5 Low comes draped in white leather with black, molded mesh side panels and tongue. The upper sees hits of Fire Red on the liner, lace lock, and tongue Jumpman. The 3M tongue has been swapped out for a matte black finish, and the midsole sports black, white, and namesake Fire Red. The outsole is Fire Red, and in classic AJ 5 fashion has an icy heel and forefoot.
