Let's take a look at the Air Jordan XXX

Last week, the Jordan Brand finally unveiled the Air Jordan XXX. They make the claim that you could say the design for it began in 1963 when Michael Jordan was born, in 1984 when Mike signed on with Nike, or in 1988 when he soared to greatness in the Air Jordan III. Whenever you want to pinpoint it, the beginning of the Air Jordan XXX, doesn’t matter because picking one point dismisses His Airness’ entire journey.

Jordan himself personally asked Tinker Hatfield to design this milestone sneaker in February 2015, and the all of the work has come to fruition with the Air Jordan XXX. To start the design process, Hatfield took inspiration from the image of Jordan soaring during a dunk contest in 1988. He and fellow designer Mark Smith turned that photo into a silhouette of His Airness with a galatic image inside. This was to symbolize MJ’s otherworldly abilities.

From collar to outsole, the Jordan XXX is sleek, and designed with the best performance in mind. Jordan’s instruction to the design team was, “make it look fast,” and Hatfield did just that. The collar has an uneven height to it similar to the Air Jordan XII, and looks slick. Directly below that the “XXX” graphic pattern surrounds the heel and extends to the midfoot. This namesake pattern also looks like a basketball net from the rear.

The upper is trimmed down with the motto, “less is more” taking root in this sneaker. This upper sits atop the same midsole model as the Air Jordan 29 with the FlightSpeed technology. Hatfield stated that tech was the “best performing Jordan” they had ever built, so it was left alone. The clear outsole features a herringbone traction pattern, and “XXX” graphic underneath.

A first-of-its-kind knit collar and liner provide softness and breathability unique to the Jordan XXX. The upper is composed of a woven material for strength and comfort, except for the toe box which is constructed using a new printing technique. This new technique employs a dotted process for a durable and breathable fit. Hatfield stated this new material was “cool,” and it would satisfy Jordan’s toe down look obsession. Finally the mess tongue features a textured globe with a blue dot over the Carolina region as a shout out to Jordan’s roots.

The sneaker was unveiled in a neutral colorway featuring black knit on the collar and liner. The woven upper features greys and whites, while the midsole stands out in stark white with a galactic print on the midfoot clip.

Russell Westbrook may have been the first to rock the Jordan XXX on the hardwood, but you can look for a pair some time near future. So keep it here at City Gear, for news on when you can cop your first pair of the Air Jordan XXX.
