Sneaker Spotlight: Air Jordan 1 Retro Hi 'Homage to Home'

The year was 1985 and rookie Michael Jordan had been tearing up the NBA. The 21 year old phenom was selected to represent the Chicago Bulls during the NBA All-Star Weekend as a contestant in the Dunk Contest and an Eastern conference starter alongside veteran superstars Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Isiah Thomas, and Larry Bird.

The entire league was officially put on superstar watch when Michael Jordan competed in what is widely held as one of the greatest dunk contests of all time featuring legendary dunkers Dominique Wilkins, Dr.J, and Clyde “The Glide” Drexler. That fated All-Star weekend, Jordan debuted the Air Jordan 1 for the first time.

The ‘85 Dunk Contest memorably featured Jordan sailing from the free throw line with his dual gold chains gleaming laced up the original Red/Black colorway. While he came in second place that year it is clear that his mark was quickly being made. He would eventually go on to best that year’s winner, Dominique Wilkins, in two back-to-back contests forging one of basketball’s unforgettable rivalries. Even in his rookie year Jordan garnered notoriety--it’s often been said that Jordan was the victim of a freeze-out concocted by other members of the Eastern Conference All-Star Game as he only scored 7 points and only shot 9 shots. The night of the All-Star Game Michael donned a pair of Red/Black/White while starting in the first of his 14 All-Star appearances. These historic appearances quickly cemented these two colorways as the seminal Air Jordan 1 colorway. To celebrate these staple Bulls colorways Jordan Brand conjoins them with a down-the-middle fusion of both pairs lovingly called “Homage to Home”.

Originally an limited release only available in Chicago, the Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG “Homage to Home” is now being widely released to the public. This shoe is a definite head turner with its dramatic split colorway. The AJ1 is one of the most illustrious Jordans of all-time and the Homage to Home is a hybrid of two of the most iconic colorways so this pair will undoubtedly be one of the hottest drops of the year.

The Homage to Home combines the black and red of the famed “Banned” on the lateral (outside) of the shoe with the white and red of the “Chicago” on the medial side (inside). The Homage to Home takes those vintage vibes to the next level with tumbled leather, a spliced tongue with Nike Air branding to match the shoes’ colorway, and the classic white midsole and red outsole complete the look. Though the Air Jordan 1 has been retroed in several colorways over the years the Black/Red and Red/Black/White will always be the definitive colors for His Airness and the “Homage to Home” really puts an extra dope spin on a tried-and-true classic.
