Brand Spotlight: adidas

The company is based in Herzogenaurach, Germany, where it was founded by Adolf “Adi” Dassler in 1948. Originally, Adi began his own sports shoe factory in 1924, and his older brother Rudolf came home after the war to help him with the business. The company became extremely successful after Adi convinced sprinter Jesse Owens to wear them, the first sponsorship for an African American. Owens went on to win four gold medals. However, WWII created a rift between the two brothers, so Rudolf left to form Ruda, now known as Puma, while Adi created Adidas. Adidas currently sponsors athletes and clubs across the globe, including golfers, tennis players, basketball players and the U.S. Olympics gymnastics team. Adidas most recently began sponsoring point guard Damian Lillard.
