Brand Spotlight: Crooks & Castles

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="512"] Rapper Trinidad James recently stopped by the flagship store in Fairfax to check out the spring 2014 collection.[/caption] Dennis Calvero and Robert Panlilio founded Crooks and Castles in 2002 after Calvero and Panlilio decided to create a brand that they felt represented them. They both grew up in Los Angeles in the ’80s and ’90s and were inspired by indie fashion brands. The name comes from the duo’s appreciation for villains in movies, TV shows, comic books, etc. For them, “Crooks” refers to pimps, hustlers and thieves, while “Castles” represents those who got rich through criminal activity. According to the founders, “the brand is not about advocating violence, it’s about obtaining a goal.” Their product line includes a variety of streetwear, including T-shirts, hoodies, tank tops, snapbacks and other accessories. They have both a men and women’s collection each season. Rappers like Trinidad James and Troy Ave have been seen wearing Crooks and Castles gear, in addition to other well-known performers like DJ A-Trak and SNL actor Jason Sudeikis.
